FAQ's about Rules

Many coaches have asked about high school rules that govern RYBA House baseball.  Since the only rules we publish are exceptions to those rules we use at the appropriate level in RYBA, here’s some frequently asked questions about playing rules: (all these come directly from the National Federation of State High School Associations Rules for Baseball (2018)

  1. Uniforms:  Rule 1, Sec. 4  “Uniforms of all team members should be of the same color and style.  Caps and shoes are required equipment”    Translation:  It is the coach’s responsibility to insure that all players are wearing their uniform shirt, hat, and proper shoes (not sandals).  Kids brought up as subs must wear their normal house team shirt and hat, even if different from the team they are playing for, per RYBA bring-up rules.

Umpires can declare a player ineligible if they are not properly uniformed. The penalty, according to Rule 1 is as follows: “Failure by a player to wear proper equipment after being ordered by the umpire shall result in ejection.”

  1. Jewelry:  Rule 1 Sec. 5 Art. 12  “Jewelry shall not be worn except for religious or medical purposes.  Religious medals must be taped and worn under the uniform.  A medical alert bracelet must be taped and may be visible.”
  2. Batting out of order:  According to Rule 7-1-2 summary: Batter A is supposed to bat, but Batter B bats in Batter A’s spot in the order.  If the opposing coach appeals once Batter B completes his at bat, Batter A is called out.  If Batter B completes the at bat and no appeal is made before the 3rd out of that half inning, no penalty is assessed.  This means the opposing coach must appeal to the umpire.  The ump will not call this on his own.  If the improper batter is discovered while batting, the correct batter is inserted, and takes over the improper batter’s count.
  3. Base-runner hit with batted ball: Rule 8-4-2-k: “A runner is out when he(she) is contacted by a fair, batted ball before it touches an infielder, or after it passes any infielder, except the pitcher, and the umpire is convinced that another infielder has a play.”

Adam Ellingson Summer Showdown Tournament

Some FAQ's about the year end House tournament (some of these can be answered by going to the "Showdown" tab in the House page

1. When is it?
A: The weekend of July 13-15

2. When will games be played?
A: All teams will play one game Friday night.  You will then have 2 games Saturday, and at least one game on Sunday.

3. How do we know who we play?
A: Based on your win/loss record, you will be placed in a pool of 2-4 other teams.  Your Friday and Saturday games are played against those teams.  How you fare against those teams determines who and when you play Sunday.

Program Information

Our House league is for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Practice and games are on fields in Rochester.  (9th graders that do not play in a summer league are eligble to register and plan on the RYBA 8th/9th grade House League).

In Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade, children are grouped on teams of 11 to 13 players. PLEASE NOTE THAT WHILE RYBA DOES TRY TO HONOR SPECIAL REQUESTS AND FORM TEAMS BY SCHOOL/NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE K-3 PROGRAM, WE DO NOT ENSURE EXCLUSIVE SCHOOL/NEIGHBORHOOD TEAMS NOR CAN WE HONOR ALL CAR POOL, PLAY WITH FRIENDS AND OTHER REQUESTS.  Practice and games are on the same nights with practice starting at 5pm followed by a game at 6pm for grades K-3, 5:45 pm for grades 4-8. Teams practice and play on either a Mon/Wed (K and 2nd) or Tue/Thu (1st and 3rd) schedule during the months of June and July with a week off for the 4th of July. There are no umpires for the games; coaches officiate and instruct on the field during the games.

Starting in 4th grade there are two levels of play. We hold tryouts for all players and form teams in two leagues: Majors (higher skill level) and Minors.  The tryouts help us to group kids by their skill level. While Tryouts are Encouraged and Recommended by RYBA for all players in grades 4-8, they are optional.   RYBA will invite all registered players to participate in tryouts regardless of whether they indicated trying out on their form. Players selected in the tryout process are placed on Majors teams and those not selected or who choose not to tryout are then placed on Minors teams.

Tryouts for 4th through 8th grade start in April. Team practice starts after tryouts and regular season practice/game nights start in May and run through July. There is also a year end weekend tournament for each league in July. Games are officiated by umpires and game scores and standings are posted. Trophies are awarded to the league first place teams and to the playoff tournament winners.

Traveling - Coaches select practice and tournament schedules

* Note that reschedules and other evenings such as Fridays and Sundays may be used based on other variables such as games at the RBC complex and number of teams per league.

What time are the games?

For grades K-3 games are at 6:00 pm during the week nights assigned. There are no other practice nights assigned for the team. As kids get older, coaches will work in a practice occasionally into the schedule.  For games, players will arrive anywhere from 30-60 minutes early.

For grades 4-8 games are typically at 5:45 pm during the week nights assigned but occasionally games at the RBC complex will be schedule under the lights at 8:00 pm. Coaches will work in an optional practice occasionally into the schedule during the week or on the weekend.  For games, players will arrive anywhere from 30-60 minutes early.

Traveling program times are set by the coach and the leagues they participate in. See the traveling pages for more information.
