Rochester Tournament Rules

Metro Baseball League Rules (MBL)

Rochester traveling teams participate in the Metro Baseball League for ages 12 and higher and therefore governed by the rules of MBL. To see these rules click here.

Rochester Tournament Rules

All Rochester tournaments utilize Minnesota Baseball Tournament (MBT) Rules except where superseded with specific overrides in the tournament supplement below:

Traveling Program Bat Rules

The National HS Leagues has adopted new rules for bats (starting in 2012). The various organizations around the country are adopting the rules with some slight variations so pay attention to the rules for each traveling tournament you participate in.

Barrel Bat Rules (2 5/8" or 2 3/4"), Effective January 1, 2012

  • Have the new permanent USSSA Mark on its taper OR
  • Be a Qualified BBCOR bat

Small Barrel Baseball Bat Rules (2 1/4" or less) Effective January 1, 2012

  • Have the new permanent USSSA mark on its taper (mid-section of bat) OR
  • Have the old permanent USSSA mark (text on barrel that states “USSSA 1.15 BPF”) - This will not be valid in 2014 and beyond.

Rochester tournaments utilize MBT rules for bat size by age below:

10 & Under - Only bats with 2 1/4" diameter are allowed

11,12,13 year olds - 2 3/4" or 2 5/8" diameter with length - weight ratio of Minus 10 or less.  All 2 1/4"diameters are allowed.

14 year olds - 2 3/4" or 2 5/8" diameter with length - weight ratio of Minus 5 or less. All 2 1/4"diameters are allowed.

15 year olds - will follow the new bat standards adopted by  the National Federation of State High School Associations for the season.  Please read information at www.nfhs.org

Note: MYAS (Gopher State) does allow 10 year olds to use larger diameter bats but Rochester tournaments will not allow them at that age.

Other Non-Rochester Tournaments

 Rules will depend on which tournament you are attending but many will simply utilize MBT or MYAS (Gopher State) rules. Tournament directors will typically communicate the rules when brackets are posted or tournaments 1-2 weeks prior to the tournament weekend.
